Why Do OFWs Need Insurance?

Republic Act 10022 (an amendment to RA 8042) established the need for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to have insurance protection covering the risks that go along with working in another country.

Death Benefits: Compensation for death due to natural causes or accidents.

Repatriation Services: Arranged return of the OFW home in the event of death or other qualifying situations.

Medical Evacuation: Emergency transport and medical care.

Compassionate Visit: Travel support for a family member in the event of your prolonged hospitalization.

Employment Support: Assistance in the event of unjust employment termination or litigation.

WHAT IS OFW INSURANCE?

OFW Insurance is a special type of insurance created specifically for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who are employed abroad. It is a financial protection plan that provides benefits if something unexpected happens to an OFW while working in another country.

Regulated under the Department of Migrant Workers, it aims to provide financial assistance and support to OFWs and their beneficiaries in cases of emergency, accident, illness, disability, or death during their employment overseas.

This insurance serves as a safety net for both the worker and their family.

Coverage & Benefits

The OFW Insurance policy is ideal to be coterminous with the OFW’s employment contract to ensure that the protection is in effect all throughout.

Natural Death Benefit

A benefit amounting to $10,000 paid out to the designated beneficiaries of the OFW in case of death due to a natural cause.

Accidental Death Benefit

A benefit equivalent to at least three (3) months of every year of the terminated employment contract that is decided upon by the NLRC as illegal termination.

Compassionate Benefit

A benefit that entitles an OFW to request for any one to visit in case of hospitalization of at least seven (7) consecutive days.

Frequently Asked Questions
